MYSTERIOUS AFFAIR IN VICTORIA (Received October 15, 11.55 p.m.) MELBOURNE, October 15. The mysterious disappearance from one of the main Victorian country thoroughfares of a transport wagon laden with 299 tallow skins valued at more than £l6OO has aroused the fear that the driver was kidnapped or may have met foul play. John Dempsey, of the Darbyshire Transport Service, Carlton, left Bendigo late on Monday for Melbourne with the loaded transport. He was last seen in the vicinity of Kyneton, about halfway to Melbourne, since when he has not reported.' A systematic search has proved fruitless. The police state that highwaymen have been operating on the country roads and heavy losses of goods have been reported in recent months.
