COUSIN BETTY’S LETTER

Cousins of Mine,

You will be sorry to hear that Percy Pencil is not very well. There are no bones broken, but he is suffering from a bad attack of broken-rule-itis and will not recover until every Little Southlander remembers and obeys rule number three, which says “At the foot of your work write your name, age, degree and address.” There were two sharpener entries this week which forgot the rule altogether, and a number of stories and poems which had a pen-name or name only, and no age or address. Some of my cousins, who really should have known better, forgot that they were entitled to degrees. Please will you help to make Percy better? We have all tried to cheer him up, but we have not succeeded yet. What he needs is a dose of correctly set out entries, to be taken every Monday. They must be taken on that day of the week, or earlier. I know I can rely on my Little Southlanders to see that he has the right medicine at the right time. Have you begun your toys for the special competition? The closing date will be Monday, November 8, but I hope to see the first entries much earlier than that. Girl visitors brought me some more story books this week, so the pile is growing fast. How long will it take to reach the ceiling?

As a result of the Community Sing held by the management of the Civic Theatre a few weeks ago, we have £5 to add to our Hospital Fund. A big thank-you to all those who helped in such a practical way to fill Father Christmas’s bag with good things for the sick people in hospital.

Congratulations to Cousins Marion Stobo, Joyce Howden, and Eva Lake who have all earned prizes of 2/-, and degrees. I wonder how many more of these prizes Mr Postman will deliver before the end of the year? My cousins have been working so hard, and sending stories and poems so regularly, that I am sure their marks will reach a total of fifty before long.

Did you don your thinking caps and concentrate on our Birthday Chronicle?

Your loving
