ORIGINAL STORIES

—VERY HIGHLY COMMENDED— I would like to live in the country on a farm. There would be lambs, horses, ponies, cows and sheep. I should love to go for rides on the ponies, milk the cows, and feed the horses. I would get up very early every morning, and go and feed the fowls. That done, I would get my pony ready, and ride to school. When I got home, I would go down to the men with some afternoon tea. Then I would help them with the work and go home. Then I would help dad put the horses in the stable and feed them. I would then go in and have tea. After tea, I would go to bed and sleep till five o’clock in the morning. —3 marks to Cousin Gordon Wilson (8), Beach road, Motueka, Nelson.

—HIGHLY COMMENDED—

If I had my choice, and could go to live in any country I liked, I would choose that beautiful country, Ireland. Perhaps the fact that my ancestors came from that land influences my decision, but I think that it was the many tales I have heard of Ireland that really influenced me. I would love to see the green fields of Ireland, and to be able t'j say that this was the country in which I lived. I would love to live among the hospitable Irish folk, and to roam the country-side, looking at the beautiful scenery. Yes, Ireland is the country in which I would like to live. —2 marks to Cousin Mary Maloney A.C., (12), Makarewa.

—HIGHLY COMMENDED—

I would like to live at Rotorua because there are lots of Maoris and boiling pools. These pools are used by the Maoris for cooking, fishing and bathing. The Maoris have to be careful when they are using the hot pools. It is said that when you are fishing at Rotorua you pull the fish out and drop it into the boiling pool and it is ready to eat.

Half of Rotorua’s population are Maoris. When you get near Rotorua you can smell sulphur. There are geysers and boiling mud pools which look like pots of boiling porridge. I think Rotorua is the place where I would like to live. —2 marks to Cousin Clarence Goodson (11), Morton Mains, Section 2, Invercargill-Otara R.D.

—HIGHLY COMMENDED—

There are many places where I would like to live, but in the summer time, I think I would like to live in a crib at the Riverton Rocks. I would be able to go for hikes over the hills or for rambles through the bush. I could have many an interesting hunt for beautiful shells and other interesting things that are near the sea. In the evening I could have games and races on the beach.

In the winter, I would like to live near the mountains, where' I could go ski-ing and skating. It would be good sport racing down the hills at a fast speed, and perhaps taking a somersault at the bottom. Then there is the snowballing, when I would have to be on the watch, or I might receive a nasty hit. But just now I think I shall stay

where I am, and dream of the places where I would like to live. —2 marks to Cousin Pattie Smith (14), Section 8, Glencoe R.D., Invercargill.

—HIGHLY COMMENDED—

I would love to live in Honolulu. It looks such a peaceful place, and very beautiful, with its overhanging palm trees around the blue sea.

The people there are so pretty, and they love to decorate themselves with flowers and coloured beads. The sun always seems to shine there, and the winds blow free. I would love to live in the heart of the bush of Honolulu, with the birds that sing so sweetly.

—2 marks to Cousin Joyce Buttolph (11), Coronation street.

—HIGHLY COMMENDED—

The place where I would like to live is Alexandra. It is approximately 150 miles from Invercargill, and most of the journey is over hills and mountains. There are large orchards which are very beautiful when the trees blossom.

On entering the township, you pass over a swing bridge which has weeping willow trees growing on either side. Alexandra has a picture theatre and swimming baths. There are large recreation grounds, and in the corner are swings and sea-saws for the children. All around grow high poplars and willow trees, which are about the only trees you see.

It is a very lovely place as well as a healthy one.

—2 marks to Cousin Vera Lake A.C., (13), Tussock Creek, Section 8, Glencoe R.D.

—HIGHLY COMMENDED—

I would love to live in a house surrounded by trees, and beautiful singing birds, and spring flowers. I would love the sun to shine all day, and the winds never to blow.

I also love the country with green paddocks and tall trees where the birds nest. Climbing trees is great fun when I am looking for a bird’s nest.

I like the town too, but the country is better. The town is so busy, and the country is much freer.

—2 marks to Cousin June Buttolph (9), Coronation street.
