STATE HOUSING SCHEME

PAYMENT OF RATES ON DWELLINGS (United Press Association) HASTINGS, October 15. An assurance that the Government would pay rates on dwellings erected under the State Housing Scheme for the period during which the dwellings were occupied by tenants, irrespective of whether the rent is or is not paid, has been given the Hastings Borough Council by the Minister of Finance (the Hon. W. Nash). This intimation is of particular interest to local bodies, for it involves a departure from the present principle involved in the collection of rates from Crown properties in that at the present time rates are collectable only on the basis of the actual rent paid by the occupants of Crown properties.
