“JILL TARS”

Sea-training is forming the unusual holiday of 270 girls at Portsmouth. They have come from 35 different countries, including Australia, for the experience, states a London writer. Each girl is a “sea ranger.” Under the care of several male instructors and Miss Anne Hopkins, a sea ranger pilot, they are living on board the old Implacable in Portsmouth Harbour. They are having lessons in almost every branch of seamanship, including capstan work, sailing, rowing and navigation. Lady Baden-Powell, the Chief Guide, is to inspect the girls at the conclusion of their training. Next year, it is hoped, even more girls will come to the Implacable, which is maintained by the Society for Nautical Research as a training holiday ship. Both the girls’ health and their love of sea life have increased remarkably during the short time they have lived “afloat.” Their uniform on board consists of a navy blue pleated skirt, a white blouse with a sailor collar edged with blue braid.
