GIRL GUIDES

The following message has been received by Miss Herrick, Chief Commissioner for New Zealand:— Buckingham Palace, July 14, 1937. My Dear Chief Commissioner, The King and Queen have received with much pleasure the Address which the Girl Guides of New Zealand have sent to their Majesties bn the occasion of their Coronation. Their Majesties greatly admired the decoration of this interesting address and sincerely thank all the guides for their loyal message and good wishes, which they much appreciate. I am also to request you to convey to those guides who carried the address round the Dominion their Majesties’ hearty congratulations on the manner in which they performed their task and on their success in overcoming the difficulties attending it. Yours truly, A. H. Hardinge. GILBERTSON SCROLL The competition for the scroll this year is to be the keeping of a garden plot 10 feet by 10 feet. All companies in the country are urged to enter and to notify the provincial secretary at once of the location of their plot. Town companies will be given a plot in an area kindly provided for the purpose by the city corporation. This will enable companies to compete under the same soil conditions, etc., and save further trouble in finding plots in private gardens. On this plot are to be grown potatoes, peas, lettuce, larkspur and poppies which may be obtained from Thomas Bros., as soon as called or sent for. Companies may follow out their own ideas of setting out, growing additional flowers for borders, etc., but the above named must be grown and additional flowers must be annuals. Plots will be visited and points given for general lay out and tidiness as well as for quality of vegetables and flowers, particularly of the set crops. Town guiders are asked to meet Miss Cumming at the Band Rotunda, Rose Gardens, at 2 p.m. today for allocation of plots. If a guider cannot attend she must make arrangements for a patrol leader to represent the company. Please bring a large garden fork or hoe. STOCKING TRAIL The Georgetown Company has notified me that they wish a visit on the Monday before the Stocking Trail. Thank you Georgetown for your prompt reply. Thk does not mean that no other company can be visited that night. The guiders’ meeting will be a campcraft evening. Guiders are asked to come provided with four sticks, a foot long and string. A training camp for camp advisers and campers’ licences will be held at the Inveresk camp (the permanent South Island camp) Canterbury, from January 20 + o 28. Entries must be r.ent to Dominion Headquarters, accompanied by a deposit of 5/-, not later than November 30. Guiders please state whether they wish to take any tests

and give their camping experience. You are reminded that permission must be obtained from your Commissioner before entering for any tests. The camp fee is £l.
