CARNIVAL ROYAL

FINAL SESSION TONIGHT Another successful session was experienced at the Carnival Royal in the Zealandia Hall last night. The carnival, which was organized for the purpose of raising funds to liquidate the debt on the new St. Mary’s Hall, has been the scene of much gaiety all the week and the crowds attending it have bought freely. The national dancing competitions last ■ night attracted good entries, including some of the . best dancers ‘in Southland, and according to the judge, Mr J. McCrostie, a high standard was reached. The results are as follows:— Highland Fling, under 12.—Betty Anderson 1, Gus Hoffman 2, Mavis Leebody 3. Sword Dance, under 12.—Betty Anderson 1, Denis Hoffman 2, L. Campbell 3. Irish Jig, under 14.—N. McLeod 1, Joyce Tinker 2, Lindsay Campbell 3. Seann Triubhais, under 16.—N. McLeod 1, Joyce Tinker 2, Mona Campbell 3. Sailor’s Hornpipe, under 16.—W. Canning 1, Joyce Tinker 2. N. McLeod 3. Competition 'winners were: Grocery order, Mrs F. Hogan, 77 Morton street; kewpie cake, Mrs Leonard, Teviot street; set of scales, Mrs Gifford, Burkes; linen bedspread, Miss D. Kane; mystery parcel, J. Hannan; rose cake, Mrs O. Fogarty; 50 cigarettes, J. Caulfield, Gala street; baby’s outfit, A. Johnston, Spar Bush; green dressing jacket, Mrs F. Hilliard, Clifford street; green underw ar. Mr Hynes. The shooting competition resulted:— B. Darroch 79 1, M. J. Sheehan 78 2, S. Wall 78 3. Today’s programme includes a baking competition, pets’ parade, fancy dress parade, novelty competition for men, and the final shoot for the grand aggregate cup. The carnival will be brought to a close tonight when the princess competition will be completed. The following are the positions in the princess competition:—Princess Mollie (green) 1, Princess Pat (white) 2, Princess Veronica (blue) 3, Princess Jewel (red) 4.
