ATHLETIC SPORTS

GOLF STEAD CUP TOURNEY SEMI-FINALS PLAYED The most interesting match of yesterday’s play in the Stead Cup golf tournament at Queen’s Park was the semifinal between Mrs J. D. Speirs and Miss Claire Smith, who met last month in the final of the Southland womens championship at Otatara. Mrs Speirs, who was at the top of her form yesterday, again defeated Miss Smith by a narrow margin, the match going to the seventeenth hole before she won bv 2 and 1. Bogey figures at the last hole would have given Mrs Speirs 84 for the round and Miss Smith 86. In the final over 36 holes today Mrs Speirs will meet Miss Leila Rice, of Wyndham. The weather yesterday was again fine and sunny, an easterly wind keeping the temperature down. Two rounds of match play were decided, also handicap events for those who failed to qualify. The final for the cup will start at 9 o’clock this morning and a Canadian foursome at 9.30.

Mrs Speirs began well against Miss Smith, winning the first hole with a 4. The next two were halved and Mrs Speirs won Elies road. Miss Smith had her first win at Turnagain after the Tapper’s had been halved, but Mrs Speirs got it back again at the seventh. The eighth was halved in 4’s and when Mrs Speirs holed her second shot at the ninth she was 3 up. The margin was reduced to one when Miss Smith played the next two holes in bogey figures and won both. Then followed three successive halves, both having good 4’s at Tait’s. Miss Smith lost the fifteenth through taking a 6. She played a fine iron shot to the green from the rough at the sixteenth and holed the putt for a birdie 3. This reduced her opponent’s lead to one hole. The end came at the short seventeenth, however, Mrs Speirs taking 3 and Miss Smith 4. Neither Miss Rice nor Miss M. Stout was at her best in the other semifinal. At the halfway mark Miss Stout was leading by two holes, only one having been halved. The second nine holes were keenly contested. Miss Rice won the tenth, lost the eleventh, won the twelfth, lost the thirteenth and won the fourteenth, Miss Stout then being 1 up. The sequence of wins and losses was broken at the fifteenth, where both experienced trouble and the hole was halved. The next hole was won by Miss Rice and the match was all square. The seventeenth was halved and Miss Rice won the last hole and with it the match. Results are as follows:— STEAD CUP First Round Miss C.. Smith (Invercargill) beat Mrs J. F. Playing brilliant golf Miss Valmai Fleming (Christchurch) won the Wellington women’s provincial championship at Heretaunga today, defeating Mrs Sloan Morpeth (Australia) 6 and 4. Out in 35 the Christchurch player was fout up at the turn. On the run home she dazzled the gallery and overwhelmed her opponent with remarkable golf, finishing two under fours when the match ended. The weather was overcast with a cool south-easterly wind when the semi-finals were begun this morning.

Mrs Morpeth carried too many guns for Miss B. Cheney, a fellow Australian player. Miss Cheney started off well but became rather unsteady on the home stretch. Mrs Morpeth took five holes in a row and won by 6 and 5. Miss Fleming proved much too good for her clubmate, Mrs H. McKillop, in the other semi-final and won by 5 and 4. They had an even tussle on the outward trip, Miss Fleming being one up at the turn. She out-played her opponent on the run home. A galleiy of 300 followed the final. Both Miss Fleming and Mrs Morpeth started well. The first hole was halved in four. Miss Fleming drew one up with a birdie 4 to 5 at the next and they halved the short third in bogey 3 and the fourth in bogey 4. The Australian found the bunker at the fifth. After she had missed a 9ft putt Miss Fleming drew 2 up. They halved the next Miss Fleming duffed her brassie second going to the seventh but reached the green in 4 and caused a sensation by sinking a 20ft putt for 5. Her opponent was quite surprised and took three putts, losing the hole 6to 5. Rain fell going to the long eighth. Mrs Morpeth ran through the green. Miss Fleming pitched to within 15ft of the pin and holed out with a birdie 4 to 5 to be 4 up. The Australian found the bunker at the ninth but exploded out cleverly and halved the hole in 3. Miss Fleming’s score out was 35 and Mrs Morpeth’s 39. There was another sensation at the tenth when Miss Fleming holed out from off the green for a birdie 3 and took the hole easily again. The Australian found the bunker and lost the next hole 4 to 6 but got one back at the twelfth with good wood shots, taking the hole in 4 to 5. They halved the next. Miss Fleming lay dormy 5 and the end came when she played a magnificent shot off the fourteenth tee to within two feet of the pin. Mrs Morpeth was short and took 4 for the hole. The Heretaunga trophy was won by Mrs M. H. Godby (Christchurch) who. beat Miss J. Brodie (Wellington) in the semi-final by 1 up and then beat Miss 5. Collins (Wellington) in the final 2 and 1.
