RIVER POLLUTION
HEALTH AUTHORITIES’ REQUIREMENTS The pollution of rivers was briefly discussed at last night’s meeting of the council of the Southland Acclimatization Society. It was stated that the health authorities had compelled several dairy factories to spread their whey over the ground instead of putting it into the streams. Attention was drawn to a deposit of waste in the Makarewa river near the bridge. Mr J. D. Speirs said that the filtration plant stopped the blood and other waste, but the Health Department was opposed to the discharge of any waste into rivers on the ground that, stock drank from the rivers. The letters which appeared recently in the Press concerning the pollution of the Haldane estuary were mentioned, and the chairman (Mr S. M. Macalister) said that it was a matter for the Otago Society, which had been advised. The river at Hedgehope and the Lora, in which animal carcasses had been seen, were also mentioned, and it was decided to advise the health authorities. “Many farmers think that the river is the proper place to throw their waste.” said Mr Macalister.
