TRAPPING EELS
SUBSIDY FOR WAGES OFFERED EMPLOYMENT OF MEN BY SOCIETY A meeting of the council of the Southland Acclimatization Society was held last evening and was attended by the president (Mr S. M. Macalister) and Messrs D. Wishart, J. Robertson, H. Halligan, G. Hoffman, G. F. Strang, J. D, Spehs, J. N. Armour, E. H. Ball, Eustace Russell, M. J. Royds, A. Hamilton, W. G. Clark and Dr A. F. Ritchie Crawford. The secretary of the Marine Department (Mr L. B. Campbell) replied to the council’s letter recommending the cessation for three years of trapping in the Upukororo river, stating _ that the department was investigating this question and would give the most careful consideration to the request of the society. The writer also asked for a copy of the curator’s report. It was stated that a copy of the report had been forwarded. The Otago Acclimatization Society advised that it had decided some time before the opening of the shooting season last year to cut out the native game 10/- licences and increase the fee to £1 all round. Through an oversight the Southland society was not advised of this intention in time for it to take action, and the Otago society asked if Southland was agreeable to increase the price next season to make it uniform with Otago. It was decided to point out to the Otago society that Southland had no imported game and could not charge £l.
The Minister of Labour (the Hon. H. T. Armstrong) advised that a subsidy on the basis of 45/- a week for married men and 30/- a week for single men would be made available to the society for the full time employment of two registered and eligible unemployed men for a period of up to six months for the purpose of trapping eels. Arrangements could be made with the district employment officer at Invercargill for the engagement of these men. Mr Eustace Russell said that only two out of eight grey ducks survived the depredations of eels. The letter was referred to the hatchery committee with power to act.
