STEAD CUP GOLF QUALIFYING ROUNDS COMPLETED MISS SMITH SECURES TOP SCORE The Stead Cup tournament of the Queen’s Park Ladies’ Golf Club began in fine weather yesterday, about 70 members taking part in the different grades of matches. The two qualifying rounds for the Stead Cup were played during the day and match play will begin this morning, the final to be played over 36 holes tomorrow. Medal handicaps in the A and B grades were played both morning and afternoon, and a medal handicap was provided for two rounds for C grade players. Miss C. Smith secured the best scores in the qualifying rounds, her gross scores being 94 and 84. Her afternoon round was particularly good, the net score being 74. She had a lead of six strokes over the nearest competitor. Mrs G. R. Hanan played excellent golf to climb out of the B grade into fifth position in the qualifying rounds, her gross scores for the two rounds being 96 and 99.

Match play will begin this morning, and sealed hole and bogey matches will be provided for the remaining players. The final will be played tomorrow, with a Canadian foursome for other players. The leading scores for the qualifying rounds were as follows: —

The weather was overcast with a cool southerly breeze when the Wellington provincial women’s golf championships were continued at Heretaunga today. After play in the first and second championship rounds two Australians, Mrs Sloan Morpeth and Miss B. Cheney, and two New Zealanders, Miss V. Fleming and Mrs McKillop emerged for the semi-finals and finals tomorrow morning and afternoon. The Australians meet in the semi-final. The results of the rounds today were as follows: — FIRST ROUND Miss V. Fleming (Christchurch) beat Mrs E. M. Hunt (Wellington) 2 up. Miss S. Tolhurst (Australia) beat Mrs Slater (Hutt) 5 and 3. Mrs McKillop (Christchurch) beat Miss H. Buchanan (Christchurch) at the nineteenth. Miss E. M. Hutton (Australia) beat Miss J. Williams (Wellington) 9 and 7. Mrs Sloan Morpeth (Australia) beat Mrs A. Martin (Martinborough) 3 and 1 2.

Miss B. Kernot (Australia) beat Miss L. Wray (Australia) 1 up. Mrs Guy Williams (Wellington) beat Mrs Latham (Hutt) 3 and 2. Miss B. Cheney (Australia) beat Mrs Welton-Hogg (Wellington) 2 up. SECOND ROUND Miss Fleming beat Miss Tolhurst 3 and 2. Mrs McKillop beat Miss Hutton 2 and 1. Mrs Morpeth beat Miss Kernot 1 up. Miss Cheney beat Mrs Guy Williams 5 and 4. Oneof the closest matches of the first round was between the Australians, Misses Wray and Kernot. Each was in difficulties to start with, but recovered well. Miss Kernot played some wonderful wood shots. It was solid fighting all the way. Miss Tolhurst was in her best form to defeat Mrs Slater and the. Christchurch duel between Mrs McKillop and Miss Buchanan was a battle royal. Good putting brought victory to Mrs McKillop. Miss Cheney eliminated Mrs WeltonHogg after a steady game, the former playing with more assurance. Miss Hutton piped a merry tune for Miss Joan Williams and played faultless golf. Mrs Guy -Williams proved that she is still in the front rank of New Zealand women players. She outplayed her opponent, Mrs Latham. Mrs Sloan Morpeth had to give of her best to beat Mrs A. Martin. She wore her opponent down by sheer steadiness. Miss Fleming conquered her hard task of defeating Miss Shirley Tolhurst. There were patches of . faulty play in this match, especially in the onward journey, but Miss Fleming made up for her mistakes and bad judgment by great putting. Mrs McKillop outplayed Miss Hutton. She showed fine confidence in all her strokes. Mrs Morpeth and Miss Kernot fought a hard duel. There was little between them the whole way. Neither was very much at home on the greens. Miss Cheney improved her golf when she met Mrs Guy Williams and went ahead steadily with longer and more powerful drives.
