TRACK WORK AT RICCARTON
USEFUL GALLOPS The weather was unfavourable for training at Riccarton on Tuesday, both before and after the breakfast interval. The outside of the trial grass provided fast going, but a strong breeze was against the horses in the run home. The plough was used by a number of trainers, and it is in excellent order, after continuous treatment over the last month (says The Press, Christchurch). Paper Slipper was the first out, and ran five furlongs comfortably in 1.2 4-5, and Wild Chase followed over seven furlongs in 1.31, easily beating Stone Frigate, who joined him at five furlongs. Trench Fight strode over six furlongs in 1.16 2-5, each three in 0.38 1-5, and is almost back to racing shape. Sovereign Lady, picked up by Chidden, covered a mile at a strong pace, the last three furlongs in 0 40 Great Bramble finished two lengths in front of Mulatto at the end of six furlongs in 1.20 3-5. Paper Note and Solwit were companions over seven furlongs in 1.34, neither being ridden out. Nightdress, who appears to be himself again, was restricted to strong exercise.
Grey Honour was responsible for a good gallop over six furlongs in 1.15 4-5, the first three in 0.36 1-5. Waitaka covered a mile in 1.47 2-5, Heloise accompanying him over the last six. ON THE GRASS Argentic, assisted over the early part by Owlsgleam, and over the home half by Rabble, recorded 1.47 2-5 for a mile, the first half in 0.52 2-5. Argentic is in remarkably good order, and should be a useful stake-earner in the next few weeks. Fiord galloped a mile'in 1.43 3-5, the first half in 0.52 3-5. He was assisted home by his stablemate, the six-year-old gelding Contract, by Tea Tray from Gardenia. Love Affair galloped half a mile in 0.50 1-5, and Wine Card beat Pelmet over six furlongs in 1.17 2-5, the last four in 0.50 3-5. Moonraker and Fairlight ran half a mile in 0.51 2-5, and similar tasks were carried out by Kindly and Elegy in 0.51, Grampian and Convivial in 0.51, Emissary in 0.51 3-5, Phalanx and Dollar Prince in 0.50 2-5, Pol Roger and Nuipai in 0.51 1-5, Epic in 0.49 1-5, and Drink Up in 0.50 2-5. Dictate was going better than Rebel Chief at the end of five furlongs in 1.3 3-5, the last three in 0.38. The former may be on hand at Washdyke on Saturday. Wild Career and Rodeur went over the same ground in 1.4 3-5. Rebel Lad and Parakino went well over seven furlongs in 132 3-5, and both should race prominently in forthcoming engagements. Kinnoull was let off with a working gallop over six furlongs. He has stood up to everything asked of him in the last few weeks, and his future activities will be awaited with interest. Cape Gabo and Royal Grafton galloped six furlongs in 1.20 1-5 and Maroha easily beat Chaste ovex seven furlongs in 1.32 2-5. Miracle, picked up by Allspice and Sunbeam, covered seven furlongs in 1.31, the last four in 0.51. Giggleswick (J. Murfitt) had his first schooling since his fall at Ashburton, and although he was jumping carefully at the first two fences, he shaped satisfactorily. Delium (J. Leach) was of no use to Top Rank (Murfitt) over four hurdles, the latter giving another fast display, in spite of having to be held back early. He is to have his first race over hurdles on Thursday, and although he will lack experience, he can be depended upon to make a bold showing.
