COAL STRIKE FEARED IN N.S.W.
FAILURE OF CONFERENCE SYDNEY, October 13.
Further trouble on the coal fields throughout New South Wales is threatened because of the apparent failure of the compulsory conference convened by the Industrial Commission to discuss proposals for a settlement of the strikes at the Broken Hill Proprietary's collieries, John Darling and Burwood.
The union leaders stated that although the negotiations had not been concluded a deadlock had been reached, and the council of the Miners’ Federation today will discuss plans for extending the dispute. The council will also discuss proposals to withhold coal supplies from the steel works of Broken Hill Proprietary at Port Kembla and Newcastle by calling a strike in all collieries which supply Broken Hill Proprietary with coal. Such a motive would not only render idle many collieries now working, but would also cause a serious dislocation of operations at the steel works.
