NEW PUBLIC WORKS DEFENDED
“MEN WORKING WITH A WILL” (From Our Parliamentary Reporter) WELLINGTON, October 13. The public works policy of the Government was defended by Mr E. P. Meachen (Lab., Wairau) during the financial debate in the House of Representatives today. Mr Meachen, whose speech had been interrupted by the adjournment on Friday afternoon, said that none of the new works could be classed as uneconomic or useless, as had been suggested by members ot the Opposition. The men on the public works, said Mr Meachen, were working with a will and taking a keen interest in their jobs. The Opposition appeared anxious to refer to them as relief workers. That was an insult to the men concerned, who were working under an agreement with the Government and playing an important part in the development of the country.
