RIFLE SHOOTING

NEW JOURNAL TO BE PUBLISHED

(By

BULLSEYE)

At last riflemen in the Dominion are to have a journal published monthly which will chronicle the doings of riflemen and rifle clubs from Auckland to the Bluff. The journal will be known as the New Zealand Marksman and is being organized by an enthusiastic band of riflemen in Christchurch. The journal will be of great benefit to the sport, as with the exception of a few towns in the Dominion whose daily Press give space generously for the reports of matches, and a few which provide for a weekly column which must be of great value to the game, the great art of marksmanship does not get the publicity and support that its value entitles it to. The organizers of. the journal are arranging a competition open to riflemen all over the Dominion to be known as The Hundred Roll, similar to that which is fired by English clubs. Any Southland rifle club or rifleman will receive full particulars on application to Mr F. Hickenbotham, Box 656, Christchurch. The first issue of the journal comes out in November. The Otatara range presented a very animated appearance last Saturday when the Invercargill Club, the City Guards Club and the Regimental Club were all well represented. Eight targets were in operation and to all appearances a very enthusiastic season' has begun. INVERCARGILL CLUB The Invercargill Club was firing the first competition for the H. and J. Smith Cup over the 300, 500 and 600 yards ranges, seven shots at each. The scoring was of a very good standard for so early in the season. D. B. Collie, a young shot who began only last season made 32-34-34=100 which was an excellent performance and was the best aggregate for the day. S. L. Wall with 33 at each range, 99, and A. Lyall 34-34-31=99 also showed fine form. W. Milley with 34-31-33=98 and J. Reeves with 33-33-32 are also to be commended for their efforts. N. Mac Williams 31-33-33=97 and young R. M. Milley 31-34-32=97 also shot well. A. R. Wills 32-32-32—96 was consistent, while J. Keelty and J. Clark also shot well for 94 each. F. G. Henderson and J. Archer, with 93 each, did fairly well and N. Price and R. R. Wood with 92 shot very well for tyros. The latter is only a first-year shot and a school boy and shows fine promise. At 300 yards the best score was made by W. Milley and A. Lyall, who each dropped a point on their last r 'ot. Their diagram is as follows:—

300 yards

5 5 5 5 5 5 4=34

At 500 yards three competitors made 34 each, A. Lyall, D. B. Collie and R. M. Milley, but Lyall had the best getting his inner the third shot, Collie dropped his fourth and Milley his last shot. Lyall’s diagram is:— 500 yards

5 5 4 5 5 5 5=34

D. B. Collie, made the only 34 at 600 yards which was top score. S. L. Wall, W. Milley and N. Mac Williams scored 33 each. Collie’s diagram is as follows:—

600 yards

5 5 5 5 4 5 5=34

The City Guards Club had 14 members out for the opening shoot of the season and their scores also were excellent for an opening day. W. McChesney topped the aggregate with 32-34-34=100, an excellent shoot for an opening day. D. Wishart, a prominent miniature shot, was making his first appearance on the open range and performed splendidly for 33-34-31=98, while R. C. Henderson 31-34-32=97 and R. Ure 33-32-32=96 also shot well. B. Broomfield and J. Buttolph with 30 and 29 respectively at 300 yards showed want of practice but at 500 and 600 yards picked up some of their old form and made 65 each, their totals 95 and 94 respectively being quite creditable. C. Mathieson, a new member who hails from the Timaru Club, made 29-31-31= 91 and promises to be a valuable acquisition to the club. D. Wishart made top score at 300 yards with 33 after counting out R. Ure, who was unfortunate. After making six bulls he dropped his last shot into the magpie ring for a 3. Wishart’s diagram is as follows:— 300 yards

5 5 5 4 5 5 4 =33

At 500 yards W. McChesney, R. C. Henderson and D. Wishart made 34 each, the former winning pride of place on the count back. His diagram is as follows:—

500 yards

5 5 4 5 5 5 5= 34

W. McChesney again shot brilliantly at 600 yards making the only 34 for top place. B. Broomfield also shot well at this range for 33, making six bulls and a magpie (3). McChensey’s diagram is:— 600 yards

ONLY TWO RANGES FIRED

The Regimental Club had 13 members present and only fired the 300 and 500 yards ranges. Considering that these lads use the open sights the scoring was quite creditable. At 300 yards

Private W. Stewart 31, Sergeant D. Bain 29, Sergeant Hill 28, and Private W. Weeds 26 were the highest scorers, and at 500 yards Sergeant Hill shot well for top place with 33, Sergeant Bain 29, Private H. Sherbourne 28, Private W. Weeds 28 and Private G. Cheyne 25 also performing creditably. The Wakatipu Rifle Club opened its season on a recent Saturday with a shoot at 300, 500 and 600 yards, seven shots at each. The weather was favourable and the scores were of a good standard. Members of the Beach Bay and Garston sections, and teams from the Cromwell and the newly-formed Arrowtown clubs were present. A generous prize-list was provided by the Mackenzie family and Mr Campbell of Beach Bay. The best aggregates were made by H. Mackenzie and E. J. Lowen with 97 each, closely followed by A. Munro with 96. H. W. Mackenzie and W. R. Brown also shot well for 95 each. The best score at 300 yards was 33, made by W. R. Brown whose diagram is here shown:— 30C yards

a 4 5 5 5 4 5=33

E. J. Lowen made the possible 35 at 500 yards, and this seems to be the first possible registered for the new season. W. R. Brown made 34 and L. C. Veint and Jocelyn shot well for 33 each. Lowen’s diagram is:— 500 yards

5 5 5 5 5 5 5= 35

At 600 yards H. Mackenzie shot well for 34, which topped the list at this range. A. Munro and H. W. Mackenzie also shot well for 33 each. H. Mackenzie’s diagram is here shown:— 60) yards

5 5 5 4 5 5 5= 34

The Mataur\ Defence Rifle Club will open its season on Labour Day, October 25. A very enthusiastic annual meeting was held recently and indications point to a successful season. Southland clubs are reminded of the competition for the Breweries Cup, which takes place at Garston on Labour Dav.
