STATE PROTECTION FOR INDUSTRIES

EFFECT OF IMPORTATIONS (From Our Parliamentary Reporter) WELLINGTON, October 1. Action is being taken by the Government to safeguard the interests of manufacturers and employees in industries which are being harmfully affected by excessive importations, according to a statement made in an interview tonight by the Prime Minister (the Rt. Hon. M. J. Savage). “Discussions have taken place between the Government and representatives,” Mr Savage said, “and the steps to be taken are being worked out in detail. We will ensure that our trade and relations with the United Kingdom are fully and carefully safeguarded, but the Government is determined not to allow men and women employed in the Dominion to be thrown out of work through the importation of commodities that should and can be made in the Dominion. The Government realizes the urgency of the matter and within a fortnight I hope to be able to make a statement setting out the procedure to be followed.”
