Fifty Years Ago Today
(From The Southland Times) OCTOBER 2, 1887 America’s Cup.— A cable message from New York states: “The second race between the yachts Volunteer and Thistle for the America’s Cup took place today and resulted in a win for the American yacht by upwards of two miles. During the race a strong wind with heavy sea was experienced. The Volunteer having won two races is declared the holder of the cup.” Long Service Medals.— Among the recipients of the medals for long and efficient service just issued by the Government to non-commissioned officers and men in the volunteer force are Colour-Sergeant Pankhurst (Riverton Rifles) and Corporal Thomson McNatty (Invercargill Rifles). The medals are solid silver and of handsome design. A Good Idea.—ln Milan recently a Christian man exposed a large-print Bible in his window, each day turning over a page. It became quite an institution for passers-by to stop and read a portion. One day he observed quite a commotion in the street and on going out to inquire the reason he found it was occasioned by his having forgotten to turn over the page as usual.
