DOMINION FLOCKS
ANNUAL RETURNS SHOW GRATIFYING INCREASE (United Press Association) WELLINGTON, September 20. “The annual'sheep returns disclose a gratifying increase in the Dominion flocks,” said the Minister of Agriculture (the Hon. W. Lee Martin) in making today a comparison between the latest figures and those for the corresponding period of the previous year. He said the total number of sheep in New Zealand on April 30 last was 31,305,818 as against 30,113,704 at the corresponding date last year, an increase of 1,192,114. This was the greatest number of sheep ever recorded in the Dominion, the previous record being 30,814,287 in 1930. Particularly significant was the further increase in the number of breeding ewes. The total on April 30 last was 19,332,077, an advance of 663,116. This number also constituted a record as last year’s total was the highest previous figure. “These figures give every reason to expect an increase in mutton and lamb exports during the coming season,” said the Minister.
