(From The Southland Times) SEPTEMBER 21, 1887 Unhealthy.— ln the Registrar-Gene-ral’s statistics for August, Invercargill takes the most unenviable position. Its proportion of deaths to the 1000 of population for that month is 2.11, the next in the dismal record being Caversham with 1.74. A Protectionist Shocked.—Mr J. W. Michell, at his meeting yesterday evening, described a scene which took place in a shop in town on the morning the last Financial Statement was published. A working man, who was a Protectionist, entered the shop and putting down 6|d asked for a pound of maizena. “You must give me another three halfpence,” said the grocer. The customer looked puzzled and said 6Jd was the price. The grocer, replying, said, “Have you not seen this morning’s paper, the duty raised?” “The duty on maizena raised!” ejaculated the customer, who forthwith banned protection with expletives of a choice character,
