GENERAL NOTES The Union Steam Ship Company advises that the intercolonial vessel Waitaki is due at Bluff tomorrow from Melbourne. The vessel will sail the same day for Dunedin. Cabled advice lias been received by the New Zealand Shipping Company stating that the liner Rangltata, en route from Wellington to London, arrived at Panama on Monday. From Vancouver and Island ports, the Canadian Australasian liner Aorangi was scheduled to reach Auckland on Sunday. She is expected to sail for Sydney today. The South Pacific Line steamer Van Rees was scheduled to leave Singapore last Saturday for Java, Port Moresby, Auckland and Wellington. She is due at Auckland on October 7. Cabled advice has been received by the Federal Company that the Cornwall cleared Montevideo last Tuesday. She left Wedlington on August 28 for London, Avonmouth. Liverpool, Manchester and Glasgow, via Cape Horn and Montevideo. The Matson liner Monterey left San Francisco last Tuesday and Los Angeles on Wednesday for Honolulu, Pago Pago, Suva, Auckland, Sydney pnd Melbourne. She is due at Auckland on October 1. The Union Company advises that the Wairuna will reach Dunedin tomorrow to continue discharge of her Pacific Coast cargo. She will sail the following day for Melbourne and Sydney. Dalgety and Co. advise that the auxiliary ketch Miro will discharge a quantity of explosives at Port Chalmers today, and will load at Dunedin tomorrow for Auckland direct. The Melbourne Maru has been delayed in the north, and is now due at Dunedin tomorrow to continue discharge and loading. She is to sail the following day for Lyttelton to complete. PORT OF LONDON The Port of London established a record in 1936. The tonnage handled was the highest ever recorded—62,lsl,3lo tons. The

previous highest figure. 59.762,150 tons, was reached in 1935. Some idea of the great increase in the port’s activities can be gauged when it is mentioned that the tonnage handled in 1919 was 26.335.191 tons. The balance of revenue on last year’s working was £1,533.726. These figures are given in the twenty-eighth annual report of the Port of London Authority. The volume of goods imported in the 12 months ended March 31 was 35,276.733 tons, compared with 33.648,623 tons in 193536. Exports rose from 7.240.202 tons in 1935-36 to 7,594,945 tons. During the year the authority landed or received 2,306,092 tons of import goods for warehousing or immediate delivery, an increase of 142,853 tons, or 6.6 per cent, on the previous 12 months. Stocks of goods at the end of March 1937. in warehouses directly controlled by the authority amounted to 553,287 tons, compared with 496.432 tons in 1936. Export traffic handled on the dock quays was 728.813 tons, an increase of 50.818 tons. Total revenue was £5.786,938, and total expenditure £4,253,212.
