The Social Round

The lady editor will be pleased to receive for publication in “The Social Round” each day items of social or personal news. Such items should be sent in promptly and should be fully authenticated. Engagement notices must bear the signatures of both parties. Correspondence 's invited on any matters affecting, or of Interest to. women. Miss G. Frazer, Edendale, spent the week-end at Morton Mains. Miss M. Cavanagh, Invercargill, is spending a few days with Miss M. Ryan, Spar Bush. Mrs J. McKay, Tussock Creek, has returned home from a short holiday with Mrs McKay, Wrights Bush. Miss Caskie, who has been spending a few days with Miss Rodger, Wrights Bush, has returned to Dunedin. Miss P. Arnott has returned to Invercargill after sypending the weekend with Miss E. Sheat, Morton Mains. Mrs W. Robertson and Miss B. Lumsden, Morton Mains, are spending a holiday in Dunedin. Miss Enid Gotts, lecturer in massage and medical electricity at the Otago School of Physio-therapy, leaves today for the North Island and- sails from Auckland by the Awatea on October 3 for London, where she will take a refresher course at Guy’s Hospital. The engagement is announced between Mr Howard Phillips, of Adelaide, and Miss Norah Bayley, who recently spent a great deal of time tn New Zealand, including a visit to relations in Invercargill. The wedding is to take place in two months time at St. Peter’s College Chapel, Adelaide, and will be followed by a reception at the South Australian Hotel. Senorita Anita Lizana—the tennis champion of Chile, who has recently become engaged to Ronald Ellis, the well-known Scottish lawn tennis player—has two principal hobbies off the tennis courts —eating ice cream and going to the cinema! She frequently has ices until just before an important match, and yet (says an exchange) never seems any the worse for it, for at Santiago it is so hot that

she lives mainly on ices and iced foods. Before she won her first national title in England, the British hard-courts championship at Bournemouth on May 1, she ate two ices for her pudding at lunch, and then just before going on the court yet another. This sometimes makes her supporters rather anxious, but little five-foot Anita knows what she is about, and does not own that determined chin without a reason. When she ic in London she likes to spend most evenings at the cinema, and William Powell is one of her favourite stars. She loves Scotland, and before she goes to America on her way back to Chile she will probably pay Peebles another visit. She has won the Scottish championship twice, and if she does so again this year, she will take the cup back home with her. Anita has worked her way to the front in such a marvellously short time, never suffers from nerves, and is tremendously determined to put Chile on the championship roll.
