PRESENT WORLD CONDITIONS
SERIOUS VIEW TAKEN NEED FOR CO-OPERATION IN DEFENCE URGED (United Press Association) AUCKLAND, September 19. The necessity for close co-operation between Australia and New Zealand in matters of defence was stressed by General Sir Harry Chauvel, known to thousands of Australian and New Zealand cavalrymen as commander of all the mounted troops in the Palestine campaign during the Great War, who arrived in Auckland by the Aorangi today. He is returning to Sydney after leading the Australian contingent at the Coronation. Sir Harry said he regarded the world situation as being very serious, much more so than the people of Australia and New Zealand realized. European conditions had been disturbing. and added complications had been introduced by the position in the East which naturally concerned countries bordering the Pacific. “Personally I think New Zealand and Australia should work more closely together than in the past in matters of defence," he stated. “Their problems are the same. It has been, and will continue to be, a naval question. Of course, there is a necessity for a complement of coast defences and a strong air arm.” . Sir Harry added that the defence expenditure of Australia and New Zealand was more than justified by the graveness of world conditions.
