CHINA SUSPECTED OF PREPARING POISON GAS

Protest Against American Arms Embargo

(United Press Assn.—Telegraph Copyright) (Received September 19, 7.5 p.m.) LONDON, September 18. As a result of a successful offensive in North China the main bodies of Japanese triumphantly entered Chochow, west of which the Japanese have advanced to Sun Ling-tien, pursuing the fleeing Chinese, whose losses in the fighting over the Peiping-Hankow railway are estimated at 6000. A battle is developing in the Shansi province between Japanese and Chinese who have taken up a position inside the Great Wall between Ying-chow and Sochow. The Domei news agency (Tokyo) declares that the authorities are giving serious attention to the large quantities of chemical warfare apparatus imported by China from Europe, especially from Russia, which suggests that the Chinese will resort to gas warfare.

It is reported that the Japanese have entered the province of Suiyuan (Inner Mongolia), occupying Fenchen and menacing Ping Ti-chuan, an important military base. Chinese planes eight times raided Japanase areas at Shanghai during the night, resulting in many conflagrations; the bombs also set fire to several buildings in the International Settlement, including Lever’s soap factory and a British egg-packing plant. The Chinese claim » direct hit on a Japanese warship.

The Chinese Government has ordered its Ambassador to the United States (Dr C. T. Wang) to express dissatisfaction about the arms embargo to China.
