Mr H. J. Macalister left by the express last night for Wellington. The Mayor (Mr John Miller) left by the express last night for Wellington. Mr John Kidd, of Owhango, who has been visiting Benmore, has returned north.

Mr T. D. Pearce returned to Invercargill by the afternoon express on Saturday. Mr A. H. Robins returned to Invercargill from Christchurch on Saturday evening.

The Hon. T. O’Byrne, M.L.C., returned to Invercargill by the express on Saturday evening. Mr D. St. George, goods agent at the Auckland railway station, has been appointed district traffic manager at Wanganui.

The Anglican Bishop of Dunedin (tlie Rt. Rev. W. A. R. Fitchett), who has been visiting Invercargill, will leave by car this morning for Dunedin. Mr J. Joel, publicity director for the Columbia Picture Corporation in Australia and New Zealand, made a weekend visit to Invercargill, arriving on Saturday and leaving for Gore yesterday. Messrs J. Cushnie (Waikaka), F. Bold, F. Sagzers, W. Rickard and R. Walls (Dunedin), J. Price, J. Finlay, L. Crocker and J. E. Tait (Christchurch), S. Owens, R. Lough, D. Wilson, N. Sadlier, J. Isitt (Wellington) and G. Joel (Sydney) are at the Grand Hotel.

Pilot Officer A. Crighton, who for the past three months has acted as assistant pilot instructor to the Otago Aero Club, has been appointed pilot-instructor to the Marlborough Aero Club. ’ Mr Crighton is a trainee of the Otago club, having begun his flying under Flight Lieutenant E. G. Olson, formerly the club’s pilot-instructor.

Mr D. J. Wesney was unanimously elected president of the Automobile Association (Southland) at the annual meeting of the association on Saturday night. Several members of the association expressed appreciation of Mr Wesne-’s services as a member of the executive and as chairman since the departure from Invercargill of the previous president (Mr J. R. Haigh). Mr J. R. Haigh, the retiring president of the Automobile Association (Southland), who is now a resident of Wellington, was elected a life member of the association at its annual meeting on Saturday night. The only other life members of the association are Mr J. E. Winsloe, the first secretary, ■ and Mr W. F. Sutton, secretary of the Automobile Association (Otago). Reference to the death of Mr George Jaquiery was made by the president (Dr D. R. Jennings) at the annual dinner of the Southland section of the New Zealand Alpine Club on Saturday night. Dr Jennings said the section had suffered a loss in the death of Mr Jaquiery, who was a valued member of the committee, a well-known scientist and a respected citizen. Members stood for a few moments in silence as a mark of respect.

Mr J. S. Dick, who has resigned from the position of secretary of the Automobile Association (Southland) was presented at the annual meeting of the association on Saturday night with an illuminated address as a mark of appreciation of his services for the last 14 years. The speakers were Mr J. R. Haigh, who made the presentation, and Mr D. J. Wesney, both of whom paid a tribute to his work and to his personal qualities. Mr Dick briefly thanked the executive. Mr J. R. Haigh’s work in the interests of motorists in Southland was the subject of appreciative comment at the annual meeting of the Automobile Association (Southland) on Saturday night. The president (Mr D. J. Wesney) said that Mr Haigh was one of the founders of the organization in Southland. He occupied a position some years ago as president for two years and had just completed another period of two years in that office. The executive had felt it should show its appreciation of his services and he would ask Dr Stanley Brown, a former president, to make a presentation. Dr Brown expressed regret at Mr Haigh’s departure from Invercargill, and asked him, on behalf of the executive, to accept an illuminated address. Mr Haigh briefly replied. Mr E. P. Yaldwyn, manager for New Zealand of the Commercial Bank of Australia, Ltd., who, it is annqjmced, will retire at the end of next month, was bom in England in 1872, and, after passing the Bankers’ Institute examination at Melbourne in 1887, he joined the Commercial Bank in January 1888. He occupied various positions at the head office and metropolitan branches of the bank until 1902, when he was appointed manager at Fremantle, Western Australia, returning to Melbourne in 1906 to proceed to Tasmania, where he had been selected to extend the business of the bank as manager at Launceston. He was appointed an inspector with residence at Melbourne in 1911, and in'l9l2 was chosen by the bank to open its business at Wellington, New Zealand. Since then he has (as manager and attorney) been in charge of the bank’s affairs in New Zealand, opening up branches throughout the Dominion. Mr Yaldwyn was elected chairman of the Associated Banks of New Zealand in 1934, and was re-elected to that position in 1935. He will be succeeded by Mr A. Mcß. Broderick, at present one of the inspectors of the Commercial Bank in Melbourne, who, with Mrs Broderick, is expected to arrive at Wellington during October.
