The boxing championship carnival which begins on Sunday is arousing only moderate’ interest, the newspapers printing no more than desultory accounts from nearby training camps. The biggest problem facing the fighters is weight-making, all, with the exception of Barney Ross, the welterweight champion and B. Garcia, the welterweight challenger, are still overweight. M. Thil and P. Montanez, the featherweights, are both 41b over. A suggestion that if fights are postponed for any reason the contenders should weigh in again has caused a sharp controversy, but the National Boxing Commission may adopt the suggestion. The commission’s physician, who has periodically examined the contenders, declares that they are in excellent condition.
