ELECTRIC POWER SUPPLY
QUESTIONS ASKED BY MR HARGEST (From Our Parliamentary Reporter) WELLINGTON, September 16. Matters relating to the Southland Electric Power Supply were raised by Mr J. Hargest (Nat., Awarua), in notice of two questions to the Minister of Public Works (the Hon. R. Semple) in the House of Representatives today. Mr Hargest asked whether the Minister would reduce the price of electricity to consumers being served by the Public Works Department in Southland so as to bring the charges into line with the indications given by the Minister of Finance (the Hon. W. Nash) in a broadcast address last September. A further point raised by Mr Hargest was the refusal of the department to extend reticulation lines in Southland to serve non-reticulated property until the owner gave a guarantee to pay annually for the first five years a sum not less than 16 per cent, of the capital cost of extension and, thereafter, 12J per cent. He asked whether the Minister would reduce the guarantee period to something more in keeping , with the avowed policy making electricity available to everyone and in keeping with the promises made to ratepayers before the change in control.
