OHAI RAILWAY BOARD
OFFICERS’ REPORTS At a meeting of the Ohai Railway Board at Wairio, there were present: Messrs L. S. Edmond (chairman), W. Excell, G. Edie, E. Davis, D. D. McDonald and W. Crawford. The geheral manager (Mr A. W. Rodger) and the traffic manager - (Mr R. Donnelly) were also in attendance.
The general manager’s report was. as follows:—“On balance, the output of coal from the mines during the four weeks which have elapsed since last meeting of the board has exceeded that for the corresponding weeks of last year by 290 tons. Comparing the expired portion of the current financial year with the same period in 1936-37 there is a decrease in the haulage of coal of 1926 tons.
“As the result of representations made by and on behalf of residents, the Leyland school service train between Ohai and Nightcaps is now picking up and setting down school children, at Tinker’s Siding as well as at Beattie’s Crossing. This arrangement has been made as an earnest of the desire to give the utmost possible convenience to the children, but as has already been pointed out any delay in the running time of these trains would cause dislocation in the other services which must be maintained. The service in question was inaugurated at the request of the Southland Education Board only for the conveyance of pupils attending the High School at Nightcaps but now not only High School pupils but those attending the primary school as well, take advantage of the service and for the latter the board receives no compensation whatever by way of fares or otherwise. It is hoped, therefore, that parents will assist the board’s officers in keeping to the timetable, otherwise the service may have to be confined to its original purpose.” The report was adopted. The traffic manager reported: “The gang has been carrying out routine work on No. 2 section since last board meeting. A start was made at Ohai to connect three lengths of 401 b rails to a back shunt in the public siding. The connection is for the Linton Coal Co. and will enable the company to load dross from its overhead conveyor direct into railway trucks. The services of a fitter were obtained to recondition some moving parts of No. 3 locomotive. The members of the staff connected with train running were recently tested on signals.” The report was adopted.
