GENERAL NOTES The motor-vessel Tamatea made her weekly run to Stewart Island yesterday, leaving Bluff at 10.15 a.m. and returning shortly before 5 p.m. The Union Company’s steamer Karetu finished discharging coal, hardwood and general cargo yesterday and sailed in the afternoon for Port Chalmers, where she will enter dock for overhaul. The Union Company’s coastal rnotor-ves-sel Waiana wits expected to leave' Dunedin late last night for Bluff and is due. to arrive this afternoon. She discharges and loads general cargo and sails on completion to return to the north. The New Zealand Shipping Company advises that the Ruahine left London on September 9 for Suva, Wellington, and Auckland. She is due .at Wellington about October 27. Cabled advice has been received by the Port Line that the Port Bowen reached Montevideo on September 5, and left there again on September 7. She left Lyttelton on August 19 for London via Cape Horn and Montevideo. The Marine Department advises that the. Akers Point light at Stewart Island has

been repaired, and it now in operation. The position of this light is lattitude 46deg, 53.9 min. south, longitude 168 deg. 11.2 min. east (approximately). H. C, Campbell, Ltd, advises that the Norddeutscher Lloyd Line has arranged the following wool loadings for the United States and the Continent:— Naumburg, to leave Dunedin January 4; Gera (serving North Island sales), to leave Auckland February 8; Anhalt, to leave Dunedin February 23; Dessau, to leave Dunedin March 30. A four-pile beacon with red globular surmount has been erected at Auckland Harbour, and the position is given by the Marine Department as follows:—Stokes Point, 106>/ 2 deg.; Watchman Island Trig., 167’/2deg. The lattitude is 36deg 49.4 min. south and the longitude 174 deg. 43.8 min. east (approximately). The beacon marks the outfall of the sewer which lies in a .021 deg. direction. Masters are warned not to pass between the beacon and the shore. The Federal Company has received advice that the O.S.K. Line motor-ship Melbourne Maru, en route from Japan left Noumea on September 7 for Auckland, where she arrived on September 11. She is due at Wellington today to discharge and load.

Wright. Stephenson and Company, Ltd., have received cable advice that the Y.K.K. Line steamer Chifuku Maru cleared Miike on September 4 for Auckland, Wellington, Dunedin, Lyttelton and Wanganui. She is due at Auckland on September 25. Cabled advice has been received that the M.A.N.Z. Line steamer Canadian'Challenger reached Boston on September 5. She loaded to the agency of the Port Line and left Auckland on July 29 for Boston, New York, and Montreal. VICTORIAN PILOTAGE CHARGES The eighth ' Inter-state Conference of Harbour Authorities, which was recently held in Sydney, has recommended to the Melbourne Marine Board, whicli met recently, that it should take steps towards bringing Victoria into line with the other states in charging pilotage dues on gross tonnage. At present the states of the Commonwealth make these charges on either gross or net tonnage, and efforts are being made to put the matter on the same basis throughout the Commonwealth. The matter has already been brought before the notice of the Premier, and has been deferred for further consideration (states an exchange). LONDON’S SHIPPING During the week ended July 30, 1156 vessels representing 1,123,538 net register tons, used the Port of London. Of these 559 vessels (893,751 net. register tons) were to and from Empire and foreign ports and 597 vessels (229,787 net register tons) were engaged in coastwise traffic. The arrivals included seven meat cargoes, three from Australia, two from New Zealand and two from South America, comprising 481,000 carcasses of lamb and mutton, 91,400 packages of beef, quantities of pork, rabbits and sundries. Thirty-two timber-laden vessels docked in the Surrey Commercial and India and Millwall Docks with 58,500 tons of softwood.
