Mrs Erskine is visiting Dacre, where she is the guest of Mrs E. Fitzgibbon. Mr and Mrs Barnett, have returned to Rimu from a short visit to Dunedin. Mrs C. S. Reid, Dunedin, is visiting her daughter, Mrs I. Macbean Stewart, Glen Failte, Waitane.

Miss A. Cournane, Rimu, has returned from a visit to her aunt, Mrs W. Murphy, Roslyn Bush. Mrs David Hopcroft, Gummies Bush, and her small son, Brian, are spending a holiday with Mrs Graham Lindsay, Waianiwa.

A successful social was held in the Riverton Methodist Sunday School Hall on a recent evening. There was a big attendance, including visitors from Invercargill. Misses K. Hancock and J. Roberts gave an exhibition of tap dancing. The judges of the fancy dresses, Mrs J. Fleck and Mr A. Peterson, awarded the prizes to Miss M. Wilkinson, who was dressed as a bowser, and Mr J. Coatsworth, of Invercargill, who represented a Coster King. The Rev. J. Blight acted as master of ceremonies. Recent guests at Golden Terrace, Queenstown, included Mr and Mrs G. Cloughley was the winner with the highest score and Mrs W. S. Hunter the hidden number. Mr W. Smyth and Mrs W. S. Hunter, on behalf of those present, expressed best wishes for the future happiness of the guests of honour, Mr Alex Evans replying. Those present were Mr and Mrs Alex Evans, Mr and Mrs W. Hogg was hostess at an afternoon in honour of Mrs Alex Evans. Mrs E. B. Patrick, on behalf of the members of the Ladies’ Bowling Club, presented a clock to the guest of honour, and Miss M. Robertson presented her with a bouquet. The afternoon was spent in music and competitions, Mesdames F. Calder and M. P. Lying and Miss C. Perrin being the winners of the competitions. Miss M. On a recent evening the Rimu Badminton Club held a successful ball. Music was supplied by the Silver Fern orchestra and an extra was played by Miss M. Millar. Mr S. Swain and Mr H. COUNTRY NEWS

BLUFF Mrs S. Norris, Dunedin, is the guest of her sister, Mrs Gordon Mitchell, Ocean Beach. Mrs A. H. Ferguson and her two children, Walker street, who have been spending a holiday in Christchurch, return home on Saturday. Mrs Bertram Macdonald, Timaru, with her small son, spent last weekend as the guest of her mother-in-law. Mrs T. T. Macdonald, Burrowes street. Mrs J. W. Lopdell, Foyle street, entertained a number of friends at afternoon tea on Monday. Miss Clover Lindsay, Bann street, who has been spending a short holiday at Stewart Island, returned to Bluff on Monday morning. The monthly meeting of the Presbyterian Women’s Missionary Union was held at the manse, Bann street, last Thursday afternoon. There were 18 members present. Afternoon tea was served by Mrs T. A. Speer. Sister Janet, of Invercargill, read the interesting and instructive address given by Miss Salmond at the meeting of the Presbyterial Association held in Invercargill recently. This dealt with the work of the deaconesses of the church. Miss Ray Wilson has returned to Christchurch from a visit to her aunt, Mrs F. H. Pearce, Athleney street. On Friday afternoon the members of Messrs Nichol Brothers’ staff met in Mr E. A. Nichol’s office to make a presentation to Miss Wilcox who was leaving the firm to take up a position in Milton. In making the presentation of a travelling rug . to Miss Wilcox Mr Nichol said that she had been a member of the staff for some years, and he regretted losing an efficient and popular member. He wished her success in her new position. Mr F. H. Johnston, manager, also paid tribute to Miss Wilcox’s fine qualities, and Miss Wilcox briefly replied. The members of the Presbyterian Young Ladies’ Guild met at the home of Mrs J. W. Lopdell, Foyle street, on Friday evening to bid farewell to Miss Wilcox before her departure for Milton. During the evening Miss Mabel McKenzie, on behalf of the guild, asked Miss Wilcox’s acceptance of a crystal candlestick, as a memento from her fellow members. She said they were sorry to lose an enthusiastic worker, and hoped that she would be happy in Milton. Miss Wilcox thanked the members for their gift. On Tuesday the recently-formed Choir Guild of St. Matthew’s Church of England held a gift evening in the Sunday school hall. There was a good attendance of members. Miss G. Woods, president, and Mrs E. G. Parsons, hon. secretary, acted, hostesses for the evening. A pleasant time was spent in games and competitions, and Miss Woods thanked those who had generously donated gifts to the guild. Mr and Mrs Peter Dixon, Makarewa, were the guests of Mrs L. Morrison, Point road, last week-end. A meeting of the Bluff branch of the Plunket Society was held on Monday afternoon. There were present: Mrs James Walker (president), Mesdames E A. Nichol, W. J. Urwin, J. U. Smith, R V Weir, J. Doyle, C. Barry, E. Barnes, C. R. Wavish, W. Valentine, T. A. Speer and F. H. Pearce (hon. secretary). The monthly report was received and approved. A long discussion took place with regard to holding the community sing, and the bring and buy sale during the week. After time arrangements were finalized. Ine committee also decided that members be responsible for the jumble stall at the sing on Thursday evening. TUATAPERE Mrs J. Frew, Ross, is spending a few days with Mr and Mrs J. Frew, sen. Mrs W. Ellis and her daughter Myrna, of Invercargill, are the guests of Mrs C. Payne. Miss Doreen Harper, Ross, _is the guest of her brother and sister-in-law, Mr and Mrs W. Harper. Miss Ruth Donaldson, who has been visiting her parents, Mr and Mrs J. Donaldson, has returned to Maclennan. Mrs W. Norman, who has been spending a short holiday in Invercargill, has returned home.
