Hints About The Home Fruit Bushes. Frighten away birds by threading together a number of tin-foil tops from bottles and hanging them on the bushes. Burns. Vaseline, to which has been added some baking powder, relieves burns and prevents blistering. Soap. Bars of soap should be cut by using loop of string; never use a knife. Sauce. Finely scraped turnip mixed with a little vinegar makes quite a nice sauce. Corkscrew. A substitute is to screw into cork a long-necked screw with a piece of string attached. PuU the string and the cork comes out. Mint Cutter. A safety razor blade fitted into a piece of wood makes an excellent mint or parsley cutter. ’ Picnic. Cover the cork of the vacuum flask with grease-proof paper. Crochet Hooks. Push points into corks and so prevent them rusting. Handkerchiefs. Soak coloured handkerchiefs, when washing them in water containing a teaspoon of turpentine, for twenty minutes. The colours will be saved. Streaky Clothes. Streakiness is often caused by omitting to move about clothes when they are in th blueing water. Refresher. Try a handful of oatmeal in the bathwater. It is good for the skin and most refreshing. Stopping Draughts. Don’t you think (says a correspondent) some people never make winter and the early spring really comfortable? Good fires, good chairs and good curtains help one to forget the howling winds without, but I like also a few sandbags for mydoors, especially for those French doors leading out to the garden. Have you noticed that the tendency of the moment is to open an outside door, sometimes two, directly into the living-room? Those doors call for my sandbags. Make the bags of some strong material, giving generous proportions, and then fill them with sand, or, failing that, sawdust. Sew a curtain ring to the end of each bag, so that it can hang up neatly when not iihuse.
