ATTEMPTED ESCAPE FROM PRISON

TWO MEN COMMITTED FOR SENTENCE (United Press Association) CHRISTCHURCH, September 13. As a sequel to’the attempt to escape from Paparua Prison on September 8, Philip Daniel Trainor, a labourer, aged 24 years, and John Henry Wilson, a labourer, aged 25 years, pleaded guilty today to a charge of escaping from prison and were committed for sentence.

Their escape was described by Reginald Coles, a prison warder, who said the two men when working in a shingle pit at 4.25 p.m. last Wednesday dropped their tools and bolted for the top of the pit. Coles gave chase on his bicycle and a sentry gave the alarm. Coles saw the prisoners enter the freezing works and later with the police and warders located Trainor and Wilson inside. They hid in a tallow vat and climbed to the rafters, from where they were dislodged by a fire hose.

Auckland and Rotorua on Saturday. Mrs F. Cowie, Lady Barkly, has returned from a holiday in Wellington. Miss K. Gullick, Park street, has been the guest of Miss M. Hamilton, Oreti.

Mrs A. Fidler, Forest Hill, and Miss E. Gill, Great North road, have returned from a visit to Timaru.

Miss T. Valli, East Winton, spent the week-end in Invercargill. Mrs W. Hagerty, Great North road, is visting her daughter, Mrs C. Wilson, Waikiwi.

At the weekly euchre tournament held in the Soldiers’ Club rooms on Thursday evening there was a good attendance of players. The prizes were won by Miss Hanley and Mr Ryder. Mrs R. North has returned from a holiday at Ohai. Mrs C. Wilson, Waikiwi, has been the guest of her mother, Mrs W. Hagerty. Miss Dorothy Blackmun, Lady Barkly, spent the week-end in InverMrs W. J. Cowie, Boggybum, and Mrs W. Jamieson returned on Saturday from Rotorua. Miss Gwen Cowie, Invercargill, spent the week-end with her mother, Mrs F. Cowie, Lady Barkly.
