Mr and Mrs W. N. Bond, Dunrobin, who have been spending the winter in the North Island, arrived yesterday in Timaru, where they are the guests of Miss Elworthy, Le Cren’s Terrace. In the course of her reply at a farewell function given in her honour Miss I. Fairbrother, who have been the. guests of the latter’s sister, Miss Patricia McCarthy, Duke street, leave this morning on their return to Wellington. Recently the members of the Southland branch of the Waitaki High School Old Girls’ Association held an enjoyable evening at the home of Miss E. Melville in Chapman street. The time was passed with music, competitions and a play, “An Interlude in Porcelain,” read by Mrs G. C. Tapper; Misses E.'

Melville, M. Service and J. Cockerill. Those present were Mesdames G. C. Tapper, J. McDonald, R. Wilkes; Misses A. M, Budd, M. Hutton, M. Edie, E. Melville, M. Service, J. Cockerill, P. The Otara public hall was well filled last Thursday evening when a kitchen evening was given in honour of Miss Bessie Smith, who is shortly to be. married to Mr George Sim. Visitors were present from Quarry Hills, Tokanui, Fortrose, and Wyndham. Mclntosh’s orchestra supplied the music, assisted by Mrs Gregg, and an extra was played by Mr P. Thompson. Mr A. McGarvie acted as master of ceremonies. Mr A. Downie assisted by the Misses Ivy Ericson and Jessie Blair opened the gifts, and Mr Downie asked Miss Smith and Mr Sim to accept them from their friends. He wished the guests of honour success and happiness in the future. Mr J. Smith replied on behalf of his sister, and Mr Sim also thanked the visitors for their gifts and good wishes. For nearly three years the National Council of Women in Victoria has pressed for the establishment of a Chair of Physical Education at the University of Melbourne. During the time they have lost no opportunity of persuading the authorities of the necessity of such an institution, and of pointing out to public opinion the benefit which the younger generation would derive from better knowledge as to ways and means of keeping fit. The creation of a Chair of Physical Education and the appointment of Dr Duras, formerly of Freiburg University, to fill it, marks a victory of which the council is justly proud. The predictions of those who held that students would show no interest in the subject and that there would not be enough of them even to form a class (40 students) have been effectively disproved, as nearly 400 students enrolled at once for the first session.
