RADIO STATION IN OPERATION
FIRST PROGRAMME TONIGHT TEMPORARY UNIT TO TAKE PLACE OF 4ZP Broadcasting on the old frequency of 620 kilocycles, the temporary radio station for Southland, which will replace 4ZP under the same name, will begin operations at 7 o'clock tonight. The station has already had a number of favourable reports on its tests, from places as far distant as Lumsden, Gore, Niagara, Wyndham and Otautau, and many appreciative references have been made to the tonal quality of the broadcast. The temporary station is situated in a house in Liddel street, belonging to the Post and Telegraph Department, which now shows signs of being something more than a mere residence. An aerial mast of more than usual dimensions makes the place conspicuous, and portions of the transmitting plant are visible through the windows. The power of the station is 100 watts in the aerial, which means that the transmitter itself is much more powerful. The hours .of transmission will be 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. on week-days and Saturdays, and 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 6.30 p.m. to 10 p.m. on Sundays. There will also be an extra period on Wednesday afternoon when the Rugby football match between Southland and South Africa will be broadcast. The station manager is Mr J. F. Skedden.
