OBITUARY

MRS E, A. POLLARD

The death of Mrs E. A. Pollard, whose son, Mr J. J. W. Pollard, is well known in Invercargill, at Christchurch on Friday evening recalls memories of the famous Pollard Opera Company (says The Christchurch Star-Sun). Born in Launceston 70 years ago, Mrs Pollard was a member of the first Lilliputian company founded by her father, which toured New Zealana in the early eighties, and subsequently went to India. After the company returned to Australia, Mrs Pollard’s father died, and she married Mr Thomas O’Sullivan at Charters Towers (Queensland). Later, when her husband organized a Lilliputian opera company, he took the name of Pollard, and to Mrs Pollard fell the care of all the girls in the company. For many years she was responsible for the care of between 30 and 40 girls, who looked to her as their mother. At the beginning of the century, the company having grown up, Mrs Pollard made her home in Christchurch, and she lived in close association with her many friends until her death.

Her husband, Mr Tom Pollard, died 15 years ago. She is survived by three children—Mrs Alice Trevor Watkins, who is in England, and her sons, Mr J. J. W. Pollard and Mr Thomas Pollard, who live in Christchurch.
