RIFLE SHOOTING

INVERCARGILL CLUB OPENING OF SEASON The Invercargill Defence Rifle Club fired its first competition shoot of the new season at Otatara on Saturday in fine weather. A strong wind blew from the east, but it remained fairly steady during the afternoon. Ten shots each were fired at 300 yards and 500 yards for the first competition for the Thomson Cup. Several new members were present and some of them who have been doing well in the miniature range performed splendidly. A feature of the afternoon was the brilliant score made by J. B. Doake, who made 49 out of a possible 50 at each range, or 98 out of a possible 100. This was Doake’s first shoot on the open range. J. Doake, jun., a son of J. B. Doake, also did well. At 500 yards he made 48 with a four-bull finish, a score that would have been a credit to an experienced marksman. At 300 yards, beside Doake’s 49, J. Braxton, A. R. Wills and G. Wilson each made 47. Doake’s shot for shot score was, 555555455 5. At 500 yards, four competitors each made 49 in the following order: — G. Wilson, 4555555555 49 A. R. Wills, 5545555555 49 J. B. Doake, 5554555555 49 W. D. Henderson 5 555455555 49 The best aggregates were: J. B. Doake, 98; G. Wilson, 96; A. R. Wills, 96. It was excellent scoring for the beginning of the season. Following are the detailed scores:—
