CITY RATES

■ To The Editor Sir,—l quite agree with “Last Straw” when he says that the increase in rates is exorbitant. Take my own case. The rates on my quarter-acre section for 1936 were a fraction over £3. This year, a new dwelling being erected, they are £5 12/-. An increase of 86 per cent! Yet my neighbours pay an average of £4 yearly on property the same size as mine, and my section is not a comer one, either. Why then the disparity in rates? I fail to see how the 40-hour week and increased costs justify the council s increasing rates to such an extent. — Yours etc., STUNG. August 24, 1937.
