Fifty Years Ago Today

(From The Southland Times) AUGUST 26, 1887 Football.—The following team will represent the Pirates in a match against Gore on Saturday, play to commence at 2 o’clock: Lillicrap, Hawke, Harvey, Gallaher, Tapper, Borne, Galbraith, Mentiplay, E. Hawke, Smith, O. Ekensteen, McPherson, Dalton, Morrison and Pattison. The Elections.—A message from Wellington states that the writs for the elections will be made at 9 o clock tomorrow morning. The date of the elections has been fixed for September 26, and the writs are returnable on October 5.

A Vital Question.—To the Editor: Sir, A large question connected with the future of Invercargill and Southland is the proposed improvement of the New River harbour, and this not only to commercial men, but also to farmers and producers throughout the district. The advantages of direct shipment from wharves in the town is of such importance to both town and country, and is so well understood by the people, that it would be superfluous to enlarge upon it. As showing what may be done, I will point to the Clyde as it now is and to the time when it was no better than the Invercargill estuary at present. This latter harbour is within the boundaries of the Awarua electorate, the next member for which will probably have to bring forward and nurse measures —financial and otherwise—from time to time, having for their object the improvement of the New River harbour and making it accessible to ocean-going ships and steamers. With reference to any measure that may be brought forward for the improvement of New River harbour, I would ask the electors of Awarua what assistance they could expect from a member resident at and interested in the Bluff. The electors will have to give this matter the consideration it deserves, and not too hurriedly promise their support. I am, etc., “Farmer.” ’
