FATAL CRASH AT SAN DIEGO
SIX OF FLYING-BOAT CREW KILLED PLANE NOSE-DIVES INTO BAY (United Press Assn.—Telegraph Copyright) (Received August 24, 11.40 p.m.) SAN DIEGO (California), August 23. Six of the crew of a United States Navy flying-boat were killed and two were injured seriously when the plane crashed in San Diego Bay today. Three bodies have been recovered. The plane was being brought down towards a landing when its twin motors sputtered and died, and it nose-dived into 60ft of water with such force, witnesses said, that the bodies were thrown many feet away.. During the night small boats, aided by searchlights from battleships and cruisers, were used to search for wreckage. Divers were also brought to the scene to wield grappling hooks.
It is believed that the bodies remaining in the wreckage are so wedged that it will be impossible to remove them until the plane is towed to shallower water.
The plane was part of a squadron which has been to Honolulu several times. This was the squadron’s first serious accident.
