SPORTS TRUST CUP

ANOTHER WIN FOR WESTERN EASTERN DEFEATED BY 18 TO 13 At Otautau on Saturday afternoon Western, the holder, successfully defended the Southland Amateur Sports Trust Cup in a challenge game with Eastern, winning by 18 points to 13. There was a good attendance. The game was drab in the opening stages. Western’s backs and forwards were lifeless, and not until the second half did they show anything of their true form. Eastern played well. The backs were well served by Ussher, who opened up the play frequently, and only some good tackling by the Western backs kept the challenger from scoring more poipts. Even so, if O’Shea (Eastern five-eighth) had sent the ball out more to his fast three-quarter line instead of kicking so often Eastern s lead at half-time might have been greater. In the second half the Western forwards regained the dash they have shown in previous games, and led by Sheehan, who was the outstanding forward on the ground, R. Rowley, Dixon, Mouat and Bailey, they dominated the play and soon had a secure hold on the cup after Eastern had appeared to have it in its keeping. The teams were:— EASTERN (Black) Backs.—B. Tutty, H. W. Milne, J. Adam, C. Morrison, M. O’Shea, R. McKenzie, M. Ussher. Forwards. —H. Henderson, B. Renshaw, I. Robins, O. McKay, D. Ford, C. Veitch, G. Herron, J. Pow. WESTERN (Light Blue) Backs.—J. Gillan, J. Mouat, E. McIntyre, R. Pettit, J. Saunders, P. Rowley, C. Carr. Forwards. —E. Sheehan, W. McKenzie, J. Mclntyre, R .Rowley, W. Dixon, R. Hopwood, W. Bailey, B. Mouat. EASTERN SCORES Western won the toss and Eastern kicked off into the sun. Milne put in a good run down the sideline, but Gillan cleared. The Blues attacked and J. Mouat just failed with a long shot from a penalty. The Blacks opened the scoring when Ussher secured from a ruck, cut out one man, and threw a long pass to Morrison, who, catching Pettit out of position, scored at the corner. He converted his try. Eastern 5, Western nil. Two free kicks to Western brought relief, and R. Rowley carried play deep into Eastern territory, where Morrison had to kick to save. J. Mouat was not up quickly enough when there was a good chance and the ball rolled into touch. Bailey broke away in a good solo effort and Morrison carried the ball over his own line. The Western backs could not take advantage of possession from a scrum heel and Eastern cleared. Offside play by the holder gave Morrison a shot at goal, but the kick fell short of its objective. Veitch received from Ussher, but lost the ball right on Western’s line. Ford was injured and was replaced by W. Southern. Following a forward rush by Western all the backs handled in their first combined effort, and J. Mouat scored wide out. The kick failed. Eastern 5, Western 3. BRIGHT PASSING Western opened with a bright passing movement in the second half, but the Eastern forwards, headed by Pow and Veitch, carried play into Western’s twenty-five, where B. Mouat saved cleverly by throwing a long pass from a loose ruck to his brother on the wing. Pettit handed on to E. Mclntyre, who made a great run and Bailey again broke clear, but Tutty, playing a safe game, cleared well. Adam and Renshaw were seen in a good run and Morrison found the line about 10 yards from the goal line. Adam was injured and retired. He was replaced by Leith. Gillan failed to save a rush and was forced to speculate, but the ball struck the oncoming Eastern forwards and rebounded over Western’s line. McKenzie scored a simple try. Eastern 8, Western 3. Western rallied and following a scrum on Eastern’s line J. Mouat crossed in a handy position. Gil.an converted. Eastern 8, Western 8. The Western forwards were now playing well, and the Eastern backs were making mistakes. Sheehan headed a rush and P. Rowley kicked through, but Tutty saved. The Blues were penalized and shortly after B. Mouat scored. Gillan converted. Western 13, Eastern 8.

Western scored again almost immediately. A forward rush resulted n Bailey snapping up the ball and passing to B. Mouat, who scored at the posts. Gillan converted. Western 18, Eastern 8. Western continued on the attack, but Eastern retaliated and O’Shea and McKenzie made play for Veitch, who scored. Tutty converted. Western 18, Eastern 13. These were the final scores. Mr J. Ewart was the referee. JUNIOR REPRESENTATIVES TEAM TO PLAY SOUTHERN After the junior trial game at Rugby Park on Saturday afternoon the selectors, Messrs L. Cockroft and J. K.
