The Mayor of Invercargill (Mr John Miller) and the town clerk (Mr W. F. Sturman), returned from a visit to Wellington by the special train on Saturday night. The Rt. Rev. Mdnsignor Howard left for Christchurch by the express last evening. He will visit the North Island before returning to Invercargill in a month’s time. Mr J. J. W. Pollard, director of the South Island Travel Association, who visited Invercargill during the week* end, returned to Christchurch by the express last evening. Mr John Farrell, representing J. C. Williamson, Ltd., arrived in Invercargill on Saturday night to complete arrangements for the production of The Merry Widow” and “The Maid of The Mountains.” Mr R. C. Ruftin, mine manager of King Solomon Deep Lead, Limited, has been appointed manager of the Waikakako Deep Lead Limited near Blenheim. Most of the capital of the Waikakako concern was raised in Eastern Southland. Messrs R. D. Halsted (Dunedin), F. L. Brandt (Christchurch), F. Jackson (Auckland), E. H. Staber (New York), T. S. Gibson (Wellington), L. E. Uren (Christchurch), E. G. Nicholls (Auckland) and C. Mueller (Adelaide) are guests at the Grand Hotel. The acting Prime Minister (the Hon. P. Fraser )has received a cable from the Hon. R. Semple, who is in Sydney, stating that his health has improved considerably and that he leaves for the Western districts on Monday. Mr Fraser replied, expressing his pleasure at Mr Semple’s improvement in health. Colonel F. S. P. Nicholls, C.8.E., D. 5.0., officer commanding the Southern Military Command, retired from that position on superannuation on Saturday. He will be succeeded by Colonel P. H. Bell, D. 5.0., who formerly held the appointment of general staff officer, Central Military Command. Mr E. J. Howard, M.P. for Christchurch South, and Mr F. W. Schramm, M. for Auckland East, who were two of the New Zealand representatives, at the conference of the Empire Parliamentary Association in London, were to leave England by the Otranto yesterday on their return to the Dominion. Mr P. H. McMahon, son of Mr and Mrs J. McMahon, Linton, near Palmerston North, has been granted his Ph.D., after extensive work on wool research at Leeds University. He was a student at Massey Agricultural College from 1931 to 1933, in which year he graduated M.Agr.Sc. He went to Leeds University in 1935 after winning the Macmillan Brown Scholarship.

Mr Alex Lindsay, who shortly will leave Invercargill for London to continue his musical studies, was given a send-off by masters and boys of the Southland Boys’ High School. On behalf of the school, the rector, Dr G. H. Uttley, presented Mr Lindsay with a cheque. He referred to Mr Lindsay’s activities at the school and wished him success in his studies at Home.
