GATHERING OF PIPERS
FESTIVAL CONCLUDES PIBROCHS CHAMPIONSHIP TO M. McKENZIE In keen competition with the leading pipers in New Zealand, Murdoch McKenzie (Masterton) won the Dominion championship pibrochs at the Invercargill Piping Competitions Society’s fourth annual gathering on Saturday. There was a large attendance at the concluding sessions and the festival was highly successful. A brief address was given by Mr J. L. McG. Watson, who said it was highly gratifying to see so large an audience gathered to do honour to the music of Scotland. He said the British Empire owed a considerable amount to the cultural contributions of Scotland for its inspirations. Mr Watson presented the championship trophies to the winner. The president (Mr John Watt) said the progress made by the society was remarkable as now it attracted leading pipers from as far distant as Auckland. It was hoped to develop the festival into one of the biggest gatherings in New Zealand. The system of judging whereby three judges acted independently and their awards were summarized had been highly successful and satisfactory to the competitors. At the conclusion of the festival the trophies were presented by Mr J. D. Campbell. Yesterday morning the competitors at the competitions, led by the Caledonian Pipe Band and the Battalion Boys’ Band paraded to St. Paul’s Church.
