WOMEN’S HOCKEY The Eastern Southland Women’s Hockey competition was continued on Saturday in fine weather. The grounds were in good order and the standard of play was high. Hokonui v. Ex-High Hokonui, the leading team in the competition, had no difficulty in beating Ex-High, the final score being eight goals to two. The game was not as one-sided as the scores would indicate, and in the early part Ex-High held a territorial advantage. However, when the Hokonui forward line settled down, it was superior to the opposition. M. Sherriff and M. Nicol both played an outstanding game for Hokonui and between them scored all their side’s goals. P. Walker gave a good exhibition for Ex-High as did B Reid, the goal-keeper who had much work to do. The teams were:— Hokonui.—M. Wright; A. Hastings, M Bratten; B. Swale, H. McDonald, J ’ Mair; M. Nicol, B. Mathieson, M. Sherriff, D. Gutschlag and B. Christie. Ex-High.—B. Reid; M. Hampton, E. Pringle; M. Wallis, A. Sherbourne, P. Walker; G. Ferguson, L. Cameron, V. Brewster, R. Clutterbuck and C. Cameron. Ex-High made a good start and V. Brewster and L. Cameron led an attack to Hokonui territory. A. Hastings cleared for the defenders and passed to M. Sherriff who dribbled to the Ex-High circle and goaled with a fast shot. Hokonui 1, Ex-High 0. Ex-High again attacked and M. Sherriff cleared but R. Clutterbuck secured and sent on to V. Brewster. The latter hit into the circle and L. Cameron secured to score. Hokonui 1, Ex-High 1. Up to this stage Ex-High had a territorial advantage and the Hokonui defence was not as sound as usual. Shortly after B. Matheson secured and passed on to M. Nicol, who raced along the side-line and centred to M. Sherriff. The latter goaled with a fast shot into the comer of the net Hokonui 2, E-High 1. Hokonui was now beginning to settle down and play more attractive hockey. A. Hastings sent a long hit to M. Nicol, who again combined with M. Sheriff in a bright scoring movement. After putting in a good run down the line M. Nicol sent in to M. Sherriff who found the net. Hokonui 3, Ex-High 1. Immediately after the bully V. Brewster was prominent for Ex-High. She dribbled up the centre of the field and scored Ex-High’s second goal after a good solo effort. Hokonui 3, Ex-High 2. Hokonui was not long in retaliating

and from a melee in the Ex-High circle M. Nicol scored. Half-time soimded with the scores: Hokonui 4, Ex-High 2. On the resumption of play Ex-High took up the offensive and Hokonui was forced to concede severa 1 corners. The Hokonui forwards then rallied and combined in a promising movement which took play to Ex-High’s territory. Ex-High defended strongly for some time but eventually M. Nicol succeeded in scoring. Hokonui 5, ExHigh 2. A period of even play followed. From a penalty the Hokonui forwards swept upfield to the Ex-High circle. A shot from the edge of the circle glanced off the goalie’s pads and M. Nicol who followed in tapped the ball into the net. Immediately after M. Sher riff scored again. Hokonui 7, Ex-High 2. Hokonui kept up the pressure for the remainder of the game and before full time sounded M. Sherriff added to the score. Hokonui 8, Ex-High 2. Mr G. C. Hamilton was the referee. Friendly Game A friendly hockey match between Wyndham and Mataura, played on the latter’s ground, resulted in a win for Mataura by 3 goals to nil. Mataura was definitely superior throughout. BASKETBALL The Eastern Southland Basketball A and B grade competition matches were continued on Saturday in ideal weather. At Gore St. Patrick’s beat Mataura and Smiths’ beat Ex-High. The leading teams in the A grade competition, St. Patrick’s and Mataura, met for the second time on the High School courts. The first game between these teams resulted in a draw, but the St. Patrick’s team was much superior on Saturday and won by 22 goals to 12. Play began at a fast pace, with St. Patrick’s the aggressor. Play centred around Mataura’s goal for some time, but the St. Patrick’s shoots were very erratic and many shots went astray. M. Fitzgerald eventually opened the score and St. Patrick’s ran to a lead of five goals before Mataura scored. The St. Patrick’s centres were too good for their opponents and kept their shoots well supplied with the ball. Whenever the Mataura shoots secured, however, they always scored, the St. Patrick’s defence not being up to the standard. St. Patrick’s was leading by 11—7 at the interval. Several changes were made in the Mataura team on resumption, P. Calder (shoot) going to centre, J. Russell (defence) going to shoot and E. Grant (centre) going to defence. The change-over did not bring success, however, and St. Patrick’s began to rattle on the goals at a fast rate. The final score was St. Patrick’s 22, Mataura 12. Playing at the High School courts Smith’s beat Ex-High after a very even game by 11 goals to 9. Smith’s experienced difficulty in subduing the active play of Ex-High and it was only in the latter stages of the game that it established its superiority. The scores were even at the interval. The ExHigh centres were superior, but its shoots could not compete with the splendid defence of Smith s. High School was beaten decisively, by McKenzie’s at the hostel courts by 13 goals to 5. The latter’s steadiness and all round advantage in height proved too much for the -young High School team in the closing stages of the g alTle - • T, J At the hostel courts, in a B grade match, Riversdale proved too experienced for St. Patrick’s and won by 22 goals to 10, after a one-sided exhibition. GOLF The members of the Gore Golf Club played the July medal match at the Croydon links on Saturday in fine weather. The best cards returned

Iri a semi-final of the intermediate grade championship A. D. Reid beat G. L. Sadd 2 and 1.
