Mataura RIFLE SHOOTING

MATCH AGAINST PUKERAU

The Pukerau Miniature Rifle Club visited Mataura recently and competed against the Mataura Club. Pukerau had a strong team, and the home club was fully extended to retain the United Trading Company’s trophy which is for inter-club competition.. Mataura won by the narrow margin of four points. In addition to the inter-club competition the home team held its shoot for the first night of the third monthly competition.

ATHLETIC SOCIETY A special general meeting of the Mataura Athletic Society was held recently. Mr D. O’Brien presided. The Southland Piping and Dancing Association wrote advising that as the sports had not been held, —and affiliation fees were paid, no fee would berequired for the coming season. They also requested- that a delegate attend the annual meeting on Saturday, July 24. The appointment of a delegate was held over in the meantime. It was resolved that the following recommendations be made to the annual meeting: —(1) That an extra womens ticket be issued with each membership ticket (2) That a finance committee be set up to deal with the affairs of the club. It was also resolved that a special meeting be called to consider the prospects of promoting a piping and dancing competition. LODGE MEETING The fortnightly meeting of the Pearl of Mataura Rebekah Lodge was held recently. Sister Gordon presided. After routine business had been transacted lodge members were entertained at a social evening by the syllabus committee. The winner of a competition held during the evening was Sister Calder. The lucky spot waltz was won by Sisters Gordon and Clark. WOMEN’S INSTITUTE The monthly meeting of the Mataura Women’s Institute was held in the Oddfellow’s Hall. Mrs C. D. Taylor presided over a good attendance of members. The motto for the month was “Happy is she, whose good intentions have borne fruit in deeds.” The roll call was “An Irish Story,” and it met with a fair response. The proceedings took the form of an Irish afternoon and an appropriate programme, which proved very enjoyable. Dr Woodhouse gave an interesting talk on her travels in Ireland. Mrs A. N. Mac Gibbon sang a special request number, “Londonderry Air.” An invitation was received to attend a “Country Day,” held under the auspices of the Gore Women’s Institute, in the Returned Soldiers’ Association rooms at Gore on August 17, when a presentation of a gold “Honours Badge” would be made to Mrs Gutschlag.

Considerable discussion centred on arrangements for the Institute Birthday Party and it was decided to hold a function on the date of the August meeting. A proposal from the entertainment committee and drama circle, that a bridal pageant, illustrating bridal fashions from mediaeval times to the present day, together with a short play, be held in the Horticultural Hall on September, 29, was adopted. A vote of thanks was given to all members who had assisted in making the banner for the Gore show. Votes of thanks were also given Dr Woodhouse and the competition judges, Miss Taylor and Mrs Caverhill (Gore). The competition for the best programme for one meeting was won by Mrs S. E. Smith. Mrs Shorter was second, and Mrs Stalker ..as third. MOTHERS’ UNION The jnonthly meeting of the Mothers’ Union was held in the Anglican Church. The Vicar, Mr Lawren- j, ga an interesting talk on three hymns which had been composed by women. The members then adjourned to the residence of Mrs T. G. Boyd. Mrs P. Aim presided over a good attendance of members. A letter of sympathy to Mrs Boyd from the guild and the Mothers’ Union, was read, members standing in silence. Mrs S. E. Smith read a paper on “Daughter-in-law Don’ts.” DANCE AND CARD EVENING The Mataura Pipe Band’s fortnightly dance and card evening was held m Saturday. There was again an excellent attendance. The music for the dance was supplied by band members and the master of ceremonies was Mr W. Paterson. The monte-carlo waltz was won by Mr H. McConnell and Miss F. Clark, The winners of the cards were: Women, Mrs F. Cowan; men, Mr J. Paterson. Consolation prizes were awarded to Mrs J. Wallace and Mr H. Willcocks.
