ORIGINAL VERSE
Cousin Clara has written a poem on a simple subject, using a simple style, which is in this case the most effective. MY PET. My kitten’s name is Peter Pan (We call him Pat for short), We show him how to jump, and do Some tricks of every sort. One day as I was going out, I heard a little squeal, And in the grass not far away, My pet had caught his meal. At first he played, and, when he stopped, He ate it hungrily. I’m sure he’ll catch some more wee mice, And have them for his tea. —3 marks to Cousin Clara Lobb, A.C. (12), Dee street Hospital. This is not poetry Cousin Mary, although the lines rhyme. Read it through yourself, and you will see that it should really be written as a piece of prose. The lines—- “ Remember the day on which I walked Through lovely bush with a friend, and talked” are the only lines of poetry. If you could write a whole verse around those, and in the same style, it should be very good. HAPPY DAYS I’ll tell about some days to you. Some happy days: on one I flew In an aeroplane from north to south, And from Invercargill to Greymouth. Another day in the car we went To the beach, and there a whole day spent. We’re bathing in the water clear— The best of picnics are spent here. To a party one day I did go. What a time I had that day! And oh, Remember the day on which I walked Through lovely bush with a friend, and talked
Of Happy Days. —2 marks to Cousin Mary Maloney (11), Makarewa.
