Feed is much more plentiful in Canterbury just now than is usually the case in June. If the present conditions continue there should be a very satisfactory lambing. It has been a fortunate chance that the winters have been comparatively mild on the hills during the past two or three years. As growth has been good the quantity of surplus stock for use on the plains showed a substantial increase last autumn, and is likely to do so again next year. Supplementary feeding is now being resorted to in many parts of the Hawkes Bay province, as feed supplies are being depleted. Hay and ensilage are being utilized principally, but on the flats around Hastings and Waipukerau pumpkins are also providing excellent additional fodder.
