REPLACING OF MARAMA

Bluff-Melbourne Service APPROVAL OF PROGRESS LEAGUE f A resolution congratulating the Union Steam Ship Company on its proposal to “institute a better service” between Bluff and Melbourne by replacing the Marama with the Maunganui was carried unanimously at the montlily meeting of the executive of the Southland Progress League last evening. The wish was also expfessed that the people of Southland would give the _ service better support than they had in the past. The Mayor (Mr John Miller) presided. There were present: Messrs H. F Drewe, H. C. Gimblett, A. Hamilton, W. G. Tait, and Drs J. G. Macdonald and J. A. Pottinger. Mr Drewe suggested that the meeting take steps to get Southland people to ( support the Bluff-Melbourne service. The Union Company had said the service received adequate support, but not I from the people of Southland. Southlanders had not been taking advantage of the opportunities afforded by the service. “But they now have no excuse for this,” Mr Drewe added. They have a better ship on the rim.” The following resolution was carried unanimously: “The league congratulates the Union Company on its proposal to institute a better service by replacing the Marama with the Maunganui and expresses the hope that Southlanders visiting Australia will form the habit or patronizing the Bluff-Melbourne service.” It was decided that it be a recommendation that members of the league attend the public meeting to be held on Monday to discuss the project to form a Southland Listeners’ League to further the activities of broadcasting in Southland. , , , A letter was received from me acting Chief Postmaster (Mi- FA. Robins) stating that a charge of one shilling a copy would be made to each residential subscriber in Queenstown Arrowtown and Glenorchy who desired to purchase the Invercargill telephone directory. The letter came as the result of a recent request by the league for information on this question. Friday July 16, was fixed as the date for the annual meeting and conference with the local'members of Parliament.
