LIVELY EXCHANGE AT GENEVA
MR ARMSTRONG DEFENDS 40HOUR WEEK , GENEVA, June 16. ' A lively exchange occurred at a meeting of the Textile Committee of the League of Nations between the New Zealand Minister of Labour (Mr H. T. Armstrong) the chairman, and Mr G. E. Scholes, representing the British employers. Mr Scholes said that New Zealand s textile industry was so small that its lesson in the application of the 40-hour week was useless. Mr Armstrong replied that New Zealand was a small country and had lots to learn, but not from the British textile manufacturers. “Our textile employers are more prosperous than ever,” he declared. If the British employers with all their experience cannot make a 40-hour week pay they should go to New Zealand to learn their business.”
