HARRIERS
ST PAUL’S CLUB New runners in St. Paul’s Harrier Club who have not experienced much wind this season received more than their share on Saturday. Some experience of this kind is necessary, as a strong head wind may be met in any race and prove a serious handicap to the runner who has not learned to conserve his energy. Out with the pack for the first time was C. Penman, a younger brother of one of the club’s leading juniors, F. Penman, and he showed promise of becoming a sound harrier. It was a much appreciated act of kindness on the part of the Couling family to entertain the pack to tea and the members thoroughly enjoyed it after their run. Training continues steadily, although the juniors show more keenness than the seniors. The results should be seen in the club steeplechase championship on Saturday. Last year this event was won by R. Wood, with A. Hind second. At present Wood does not appear to be fit and may not start, although if he does he will be well in the running. Hind will have strong opposition from J. Clark, who was third last year, N. Dorman, A. Stevens, B. McAlister, and W. Miller. Others who may spring a surprise are J. Harding, G. Couling, J. Falconer, G. Alington and F. Penman.. Harding is once more getting into his stride and may do well before the season ends, as he has a nice easy action. As there is a sealed handicap in conjunction with the race it is hoped that all members will turn out The handicap will give everyone a chance and there are several long-mark men who have been training hard and may surprise the handicapper. The race will cover two and a-half laps of the steeplechase course and runners are advised to get to the racecourse in good time and have a look at the jumps before the race.
