SOUTHLAND UNION MEETING OF EXECUTIVE At a meeting of the executive of the Southland Basketball Union last evening there were present: Miss E. B. Pay (president), Mesdames Noble, Challis and Lemin, Misses Godward, Smith, Hallamore, Huttori, McKenzie and Shand and Messrs A. Kinross and E. Service. Mrs R. S. Mclnnes, of Wellington, was present on the invitation of the executive. The president reported that the King’s Birthday tournament was a great success. Matches were completed to schedule, and the winners were as follows:—First grade, Collegiate; second grade, Pirates; third grade, Roslyn Bush; fourth grade, Mataura Island; fifth grade, Colac Bay. r, It was decided that players should assemble on Saturday at 2 p.m. for the grand parade, at the comer of Gala and Dee streets, that team slips would • be handed out to all captains to be filled in as for match days, and that club captains should see Mr Smart before the parade began. It was stated that the Pipe Band would head the parade and would be followed by the last year’s representative team and clubs in the following order: Rata, McKenzie’s, Collegiate, St. Mary’s, Makarewa, Pirates, Technical College. Wallacetown, St. Peter’s. H. and J.’s, Rosedale, Kiwi and Girl’s High School. Mr Kinross and Mr Service were appointed stewards, and it was decided that teams should line up in threes. The carnival committee reported that the Boys’ Band would play at the post office at 7.30 on Friday evening and play outside the Victoria hall, and that a programme had been arranged for both evenings and Saturday afternoon. Entries for the Country Day tournament on July 10 were received from the Waiau Association (two teams), the Northern Association and the Central District (two teams). A letter was received from the Otago Association inviting A and B teams to play the annual fixture against Otago in Dunedin, and it was decided to suggest August 7 as a suitable date. It was decided to suggest July 24 as the date for the second grade fixture against Central District, to be played at Winton, as it was necessary that this match be played before August 7, the winners of this match having the right to play the Otago second grade representatives for the Otago Cup. The match committee reported that two teams, Kiwi fourth grade and Collegiate fourth grade, had defaulted on Saturday, June 5. and it was decided that they be fined 5/-. St. Peter’s was fined 1/- for having no team slip on the same date. It was decided that the winner of the queen carnival contest should be announced on Saturday night. A donation of £1 1/- was received from Mr W. C. Denham, M.P.,_ towards the expenses of the representative team travelling to Auckland. MENZIES ASSOCIATION A GRADE REPRESENTATIVE TRIALS (By SHOOT) In bitterly cold weather and with an exceedingly strong wind to make play difficult, some 31 players presented themselves for selection at the trials at Seaward Downs on Saturday afternoon. After the players had settled down in strange company, combination became better, particularly in the forward third, where the play was of a fairly high order throughout The defences took rather longer to strike form, but some good performances were given. On file afternoon’s play the following 21 players were selected, and from these the two teams and the emergencies will be chosen after a practice to be held at Seaward Downs: Forwards.—J. Palmer, M. Palmer, D. Donnelly (Seaward Downs), E. Rhodes, M. Rhodes (Mataura Island), P. Halliday (Edendale), A. Macfarlane (Wyndham). • Centres.—K. Morton (Seaward Downs), L. Drysdale, N. Hamilton (Menzies Ferry), M. Frame, N. Rice (Wyndham), M. Dunn, M. Dunlop (Mataura Island). Defences.—J. McDonald, M. Casey (Edendale), A. Richardson (Mataura Island), J. Young, M. Gorman (Wyndham), J. Hawke (Seaward Downs), D. Ross (Menzies Ferry). The selectors (Messrs H. P. Bryant, V. B. Foxon and E. S. Macfarlane) have now reduced the number of nominated players to 21. Seven good forwards are available and the trouble will be just who to put in the senior team and who to put in the junior team. In any case, whatever the final selection, both teams will have good shoots. The defences also appeal as being a very reliable lot, but the junior centres will not be as strong as they might be. Taking recent form as a guide, I think the following teams would be the strongest from the above-mentioned 21 players:— Senior team.—J Palmer (Seaward Downs), E. Rhodes (Mataura Island), P. Halliday (Edendale); L. Drysdale (Seaward Downs), K. Morton (Seaward Downs), M. Dunn (Mataura Island); J. Young (Wyndham), J. Hawke (Seaward Downs), A. Richardson (Mataura Island). Junior team.—A. Macfarlane .(Wyndham), M. Palmer (Seaward Downs), D. Donnelly (Seaward Downs); N. Hamilton (Menzies Ferry) N. Rice (Wyndham), M. ' Dunlop (Mataura Island); J. McDonald (Edendale), M. Gorman (Wyndham), M. Casey (Edendale).
