AVERAGE RENTS LIKELY
GOVERNMENT HOUSES (United Press Association) WELLINGTON, May 24. The acting Prime Minister (the Hon. P. Fraser) has announced that the average rents likely for Government houses are as follows:— Three roomed flat, without sunporch, in a two unit house—£l. Three roomed flat, with sunporch, m a two-unit house —£1 2/6. Four roomed house—£l 7/6. Four roomed house, with sunporch £1 9/-. Five roomed house—£l 10/6. Five roomed house, with sunporch—£l 12/-.
Six roomed house—£ll3/6. All with a 2/6 rebate for good tenancy. The rent for a six roomed house with a sunporch and garage has not yet been determined. The rents would vary according to the locality and the site. It was proposed to charge these rents throughout New Zealand. Ample provision was made for maintenance, the interruption of tenancy, and the cost of management, etc. It was shortly proposed to erect some concrete houses for which the rents would probably be less. In the light of experience the position would be reviewed in twelve months and the rents could be fixed permanently. The department was considering the erection of houses suitable for elderly couples on slender incomes. No doubt these houses would form a feature of future schemes.
